Expert Consultant with proven experience in the field of disability and sectoral mapping/sectoral situational analysis



Handicap International (HI) has launched a three year regional project, “Towards Disability Inclusive Development through a Strengthened Rehabilitation Sector in South Asia” in 4 countries: Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka & Afghanistan. The project seeks to improve the provision of physical rehabilitation services for people living with disabilities and empower them to participate in development and policy reform processes.
One gap in the physical rehabilitation sector is the lack of evidence to support advocacy actions; comprehensive needs analysis have not been carried out in any of the countries. This project will carry out an analysis of needs and unmet needs, with particular focus on human resources and HRH issues (trainings, standards, accreditation, levels of recognition of professions, rehab human resource supply, distribution and capacity), and also look at services and policy/governance. The analysis will be used by HI and its stakeholders (government ministries, professional associations, DPOs) to develop and prioritise an action plan to address gaps in the sector.
1.      DESCRIPTION OF THE ASSIGNMENT
2.1. Overall Objective of the Assignment. Assist HI to carry out a mapping of three elements of the physical rehabilitation sector (with focus on human resources, services and policy/governance).
2.2. Specific Objectives
(i) develop a framework of analysis for the physical rehabilitation sector (with particular focus on human resources, as well as services and policy/governance). This framework will include a survey (for implementation by HI project teams in 4 countries), proposed sectoral indicators of the rehab sector, a planned approach for hosting a participative workshop for rehabilitation stakeholders,
(ii) initiate this analysis in four countries in South Asia by facilitating four, 1-day stakeholder workshops in each country (iii) Conduct final compilation, analysis and write up (of survey and stakeholder group findings) into a report. 2.5. Duration Starting date: Aug/Sep 2012 Expected Duration: 30 days [in three parts with time gap in-between to allow collection of survey / questionnaire data]
2.6. Required profile
 Degree in occupational therapy/ physiotherapy/ prostheticsØ &  Experience in MØ Strong knowledge of latest issues and trends in physical rehabilitation Ø Experience in performing sectoral analysis / mapping, situation analysis or sector surveys in physical rehabilitation or related area Øorthotics or equivalent & Experience facilitating stakeholder groups, workshops etc.Ø Demonstrated technical expertise regarding disability, with a focus on functional rehabilitation ØE, sectoral definition, developing indicators
 Previous experience working for Handicap International Legal requirement: Consultants must be able to prove their legal status (e.g. registration as a self employed consultant).ØDesirable

PROFILE OF CLINICAL PLACEMENT FACILITY AT MANIPAL


 The Department of Occupational Therapy [OT] at Manipal College of Allied Health Sciences [MCOAHS], Manipal University [MU] is a premiere centre in the country both in terms of imparting OT education and offering OT clinical services.

The Occupational Therapy Department at Manipal was established in the year 1972 under the Department of Orthopedics in Kasturba Hospital, as a small clinical unit offering occupational therapy services. It was in September 1994, the Department started with 4½ year full time program in Bachelor of Occupational Therapy under Kasturba Medical College. Then in the year 1999 the academic program of the Department shifted to Manipal College of Allied Health Sciences.

The Department also conducts Masters of Occupational Therapy Program (two year, full time, post professional, advanced level, clinic based and with Dissertation program in different specialty), which started in September 2002.Manipal University has also started with part time post master’s PhD Program for in-service candidates and shortly would be starting with full time PhD Programs. This is the first centre in India offering facility for higher qualifications. Besides this we also offer short term Certificate Course in Hand Splinting, the first of its kind in India, since 2008.

The integrated education and clinical practice is the hallmark of this institute. The academic program is designed in such a way that the students can pursue their clinical practice and academic know-how in context with the social fabric both nationally and internationally. Within these few years of the Programs been started our students are not only doting various part of the country but also various international destinations.

Years of excellence in clinical practice, Occupational Therapy Department has redefined the practice of occupational therapy. The Occupational Therapists at Manipal are competent faculty and astute clinicians. The clinical facility of OT Dept. is located within the 2050 bedded multi-specialty Kasturba Hospital [University Hospital] offering tremendous clinical resources both in the form of inpatients & outpatients. It has developed specialized areas of clinical practice: neuro- rehabilitation. child habilitation, mental health rehabilitation, orthopedic rehabilitation, ADL unit, work rehabilitation unit, standard assessment lab, hand splinting and instrumentation workshop.

The Dept. of Occupational Therapy has also been associating with other countries to upgrade their OT qualification. Currently we are working with Nigerian OT’s [from Federal School of Occupational Therapy, Lagos, Nigeria] and Srilankan OT’s to upgrade their academic qualification and are looking forward to do the same for other countries as well.

The Dept. of Occupational Therapy is the hub for clinical placement in India, students from different institutes in India and world over come here to get a clinical exposure. The campus offers a very safe, secure and cosmopolitan ambience. It also offers the international students a great opportunity to interact Indian OT academics, clinicians and graduate & post graduate OT students. We have students coming from:

Hello Koushik,

I am a Pediatric Occupational Therapist from the Los Angeles area and work in private practice with a specialty in feeding/swallowing and Assisstive Technology. In addition I am contracted with a school district in the area. I am an international presenter at various conferences, such as Closing The Gap in Minnesota and iCreate in Singapore. From July 1 through December 31, 2012, my teenage son and I will be volunteering at Sweekaar Upkaar in Hyderabad.

As we want to travel within India I am looking for opportunities to give presentations to schools/ treatment centers for  children/ colleges or to OT associations and pair it with my travel. 
I want to share as much knowledge as possible with OTs in India and surrounding countries.
The idea is to exchange my expertise for maybe housing or some other bartered services to explore.

Fulbright-Nehru and other fellowship


Greetings from the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF)!

Thank you for your interest in the Fulbright-Nehru and other fellowships administered by USIEF.

USIEF will hold a half-day mentoring workshop in Chennai on Thursday June 21, 2012 and in Bangalore on Friday June 29, 2012, on the procedures and guidelines for applying to the 2013-14 Fulbright-Nehru and other fellowships.
As you know, the deadline to apply for most categories of the Fulbright-Nehru and other fellowships is July 16, 2012. The workshops are for potential candidates preparing to apply for the fellowships this year. The workshops will have presentations by USIEF staff and Fulbright alumni on the application process, elements of a strong application (eg: a good research proposal or personal statement) and getting effective letters of recommendation.
